I am on an essential skills work visa which is expiring on the 6th of August 2019. I have 2 years of experience as a hair stylist. I am working outside of Auckland. I want to know which visa
I can get and will I be able to get a 3-year work visa.
Dear John,
You may be able to apply for a work visa under the Essential Skills work visa policy if you meet the following requirements:
1. Your employer must ensure that they have made a genuine effort to hire a suitable NZer for the role
You may wonder, why on earth would you ask your employer to make an effort to hire a New Zealander when you actually want them to hire you. But this is the requirement by Immigration New Zealand.
2. You need to meet the skill level requirement for Hairstylist as per ANZSCO
You must have a relevant qualification at Level 4 or above or a minimum of three years of work experience to be considered suitably qualified for the role. If you don’t meet this criteria, it doesn’t mean that your visa will not be granted but INZ may either:
- Challenge that you are not suitably qualified for the role and yet employer may have declined similar NZers by stating that they are not qualified, or
- Consider granting you a work visa for hairstylist assistant by establishing that the role actually doesn’t require someone qualified as per ANZSCO and thus the role may be that of an assistant.
We recommend that you discuss the role in detail with the employer and come back to us if you need any assistance.
Kind regards,
Malkiat Singh
